Don’t Let Propaganda Drown Out Your Dreams: A Parting Editorial

Have you ever tried to live out your dreams? Childhood memories creep back in and dazzle me, astonished that I've lived out many of my goals and dreams. A friend said to me the other day that "Americans seem to be go getters." Some of us are even driven in California to do the Superman grind, going to school, going to work, trying to love yourself, while loving your family, your companion, while trying to obtain a hold of your destiny. But with all the high gas prices, high tuition, parking fees, parking tickets (seeing that most areas that have signs, have two or more sets of directions on when and when not to park) and don't forget about parking permits. See what I mean, who wouldn't get lost and somehow lose track of their goals, dreams and aspirations.

In this day and age we just have to be prepared! People have been saying this for awhile, but things just seem to be getting worse and worse every day. Do we really know who should be voted into presidency? I hope the masses pick someone who is passionate about creating positive changes for the world. What scares me is that some people don't have a clue. They don't know the facts and may vote for someone that may turn America for the worse.
One may think I'm crazy but, I had to turn off the TV for awhile. There were so many pictures, images and thoughts in my mind that I just needed silence. So I could just think. Because the nation does need change.

Some may think it's odd but I took a TV fast. Yes, I stopped watching TV for awhile. Seeing that TV, the radio, movies, and billboards have a lot of junk in them. The majority of ads are advertising liquor, cigarettes, and whatever else you could possibly buy. Now we even have numerous billboards with flashing lights, with a slide show of commercials. Aren't we wasting electricity? (Could you imagine if we took that money and used it for those suffering from natural disasters… or those who are desperate for water…) And aren't we supposed to be focused on the road and driving, no wonder we have so much traffic, and accidents, people are so distracted by things everywhere. To top it off, it's rare that it's edifying our minds either. How much entertainment and propaganda do we need in our lives? I understand and see why some youth have no direction in life. These days kids are raising kids, or parents are busy working and unable to give their children the attention that they need and deserve. Forcing their child to learn and grow from the streets, school, television and the worldwide web.

If you asked me about a new song, movie, or the latest reality show I couldn't really tell you. But did you know that Jerry Springer has a stripper's pole on stage now? What is the world coming to? Maybe I do prefer shows that don't offend "my sisters." It just makes me a little sad to see where TV is going. I know it's just entertainment, but where do we draw the line?

I have faith that it will turn around. It will turn around when people can instill encouragement to those around them, and tell them to reach for the stars and to fulfill their dreams. To walk into their purpose, and not be weary when trials come. But above all else never quit, and to listen to your heart's desire. It will bring you joy and satisfaction. Plus you will most likely make a difference in someone else's life.

What would you do if you saw someone with a swastika tattooed on their forehead? Well, last week while standing in front of SMC, waiting for the number 7 bus I saw a Caucasian boy walk past me with that tattooed on their forehead. Personally, I had to remember what my ancestors fought for, I had to stand tall and remember people like Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman. My dream is that America changes, my dream is that the nation will wake up.

Spike Lee "Do The Right Thang," keep writing, keep directing, keep making movies. Some people may not see, or understand, but they will one day. One day they will be able to understand what some people in life have endured. Some people's hearts are so hard, or they are just so into themselves they don't even understand when you tell them “my little brother got shot,” and it didn't even make it on the news or the newspaper. "Boys in the Hood" is a sad movie, I know I cry. Some people just need a reality check. We weren't all born under white picket fences with BMW's. Plus the majority of people who did grow up with “old money” aren't living a peaceful life; inside the fences is a disarray. Plus, materialistic items isn't what will fulfill you in life, it's your dreams. So it does benefit us all to just let nature run its course and let those who are destined to be in certain positions come up to the plate and fulfill their dreams.
"By any means necessary," said Malcolm X. Things can change. Marriages will last, maybe the government will stop making a mockery of marriage and not cheat on their wife, love can spread amongst the nation, and we can "pursue peace," according to the Bible. Gas prices don't have to be this high, rent doesn't need to be so high, and maybe once we can pay our bills, debts will lower. Then maybe people could focus more on their dreams without feeling life's burdens.

If we all owned up to our desires and dreams, maybe the world would be a better place. Maybe if we stopped hating on each other, change could happen. Instead of dismissing someone's skills, maybe we should give them credit where credit’s due, so that they excel into their dream.
"Just be who will you be," said Maria Shriver (author, “Just Who Will You Be”). "When you answer the question don't think of fame, think of your precious legacy, think of your name! When you ask, "Who am I And who will I be, and just exactly how long will it take to be me?” I say, "Please take your time, don't be in a rush, take time to consider, and ponder and such. Will you be a person running on greed? Or will you be the one giving to people in need? Will you just collect awards to put on your shelves? Or will you help people who can't help themselves? 'Cause when I feel lousy, or lost or I'm nervous, I feel better about me when I'm of service. Think of using your brains and your talent and youth to solve difficult problems to find out the truth. To make this crazy world a far better place, to make improvements for our human race."
