Former Corsair Adviser Passes Away at 92

Florence Julia Vlach, former head of the Journalism Department at Santa Monica College and Corsair advisor, died on Saturday, April 19 on her 92nd birthday. Her body was cremated and the remains are now at Woodlawn Cemetery, which is across the street from the college on Pico.
Vlach joined the faculty at SMC in 1952 and retired in 1980. She was born and raised in Nebraska and earned her B.A. in Journalism at the University of Missouri. She later obtained a Master's Degree from UCLA. She worked for several newspapers before embarking on a teaching career at SMC. As a Journalism instructor at SMC, she was also the advisor to the Corsair and served as public relations counsel to the president of the college.

Meltdown Over New A.S. Constitution

Maintaining her composure, Student Trustee Adel Morad held back tears as she abruptly got up to vacate the board room. An enraged Associated Students director of financial support, John Kernick slammed his fist to the table, fuming. Yelling in objection, Kernick said, “This is absurd!” Moments prior to the tantrum, A.S. Vice President Melody Overstreet let Inter-Club Council Chair Shahriar Azimi read underlined text from the current A.S. Constitution, disallowing Morad to sit in on the special “Joint-Council” meeting to vote on the new constitution.

$4.8 Billion Cut Proposed To Education

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is poised to submit his revision to California’s impending $4.8 billion in budget cuts to education on May 14. These cuts have been widely criticized as a haphazard and short-sighted attempt to balance the state’s projected $14.5 billion deficit.

A Day for Laughter & Downward Facing Dog

It was just another lazy, hazy, feel-good Sunday on May 4 at the Santa Monica Beach, as adults, teens and babies from all around Santa Monica joined in to celebrate the first World Laughter Day on the Westside. World Laughter Day was created in 1998 by Dr. Madan Kataria, founder of the worldwide Laughter Yoga movement, which began in 1995. Dr. Kataria went against the tide and came up with stimulating laughter exercises now known as “Laughter Yoga” to relieve stress and get rid of various forms of diseases.
