Students, start your engines! Ready, set, go… back to school! For most, the prospect of returning for yet another semester at Santa Monica College is one of routine. Between crashing that jam-packed English class, waiting in the labyrinth that is the line to buy a textbook and picking up your weekly issue of the “Corsair” of course, coming back becomes as commonplace as celebrities receiving DUI’s in L.A.
However, for those new to the establishment, SMC could seem very reminiscent of the film “Gangs of New York” and the hullabaloo depicted of the congested and hectic metropolis at the time with its diverse assortment of groups, the horse carriages, and ministers preaching while spectators were being scrutinized by the resident pickpockets. At SMC though, the scene is not as 19th century, but the similarities are there with its rampant environment as noticeably displayed in the first week of school.
From the jugglers of the Circus Arts Club to the habitual sight of students analyzing their texts cover to cover and the omnipresent promoters offering free movies while students donate blood, the first week back at SMC, for new and former students alike, is a non-stop race- track of colorful sights that although customary are nevertheless interesting to say the least.
