Standing For Those Who Stood For Us Story and Photography by Don Baggett/Corsair Contributor
The Patriot Guard has been comforting families of fallen soldiers since 2005. The local chapter of the Patriot Guard is tasked with missions, which consist of a flag line ceremony, usually at graveside. On occasion these events of remembrance are held at a church or chapel. The services are for soldiers who have lost their lives in the Iraq War. This past March and April, Patriot Guard missions have included flag line services for several veterans of other wars with no family members and for a “Gold Star mother” who was involved for several years with the Patriot Guard.
At a funeral service for Marine Corporal Miguel Guzman, several California Highway Patrol officers expressed their appreciation for what he had accomplished in his short time on Earth. Many of the officers involved in forming the procession honoring Guzman saluted their fallen comrade as the hearse carrying the soldier’s body passed by.
Families are touched when they learn that Patriot Guard members take their time traveling long distances to honor their sons and daughters. “It was a very heartbreaking thing for us and his family and it brought more tears to our eyes to see so many of you there giving your time, respect and tears for Dean. May our God bless and keep all of you safe on your rides. You will not be forgotten in our hearts. Thank you,” wrote Clyde & Valerie Bright in a letter to the Patriot Guard Riders.
Most Patriot Guards travel to missions on Harleys or other large bikes. For two weeks prior to Memorial Day, a slew of members travel to Washington, D.C., for special services at the Vietnam Veteran Memorial, “The Wall.” Recently a contingent departed from Rancho Cucamonga, which included a helicopter escort.
The sole mission of the Patriot Guard is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family. During this time the Patriot Guard shields the mourning of family and their friends from interruptions created by any protesters.
