How many times have you been roller skating and fallen to the ground and gotten a bruise? You whine as you rub your skinned knee, or sometimes rock back and forth saying, “ooohhhh, ahhhhhh.” Now get up again, start skating to catch and pass your friend, but watch out for the four vicious girls in front of you, blocking, ramming, and trying to knock you down. That’s Roller Derby!

Roller Derby is an American-invented contact sport created by Leo Seltzer in the 1930s. Created first as a simulation cross country roller skating race, Seltzer and sportswriter Damon Runyon later noticed the most exciting parts were the falls and crashes, so they modified the game to a similar format that we see today. The game consists of jams, or two-minute periods where the team’s single jammer tries to score points by passing and lapping the opposing four players. The blockers are allowed to impede the progress of the opposing team’s jammer by using body parts above the hips, excluding forearms, hands and head. With a punk rock style and hundreds of fans watching, these games are extremely exciting to watch.
With gaining popularity, Roller Derby has multiple choices and venues in the Los Angeles area, the two most popular leagues are the Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby Association (WFTDA) staring the Angel City Derby Girls and the independently owned Los Angeles Derby Dolls who play on a banked, oval track with over 60 girls and four teams. No matter which team you choose to watch, you’ll be introduced to lots of intense DIY skating action with lots of speed, slides and crashes.
